ROMEO AND JULIET CAN'T BE CALLED A LOVE STORY!

Having taught English Literature for more than two score years,I am bold enough to declare that 'Romeo and Juliet' is not a love story. If you love someone,you wish her/him all the happiness,even if you are forced to be separated.In case of obstacles,one or both,lover and beloved,taking poison or dying proved that they loved their love more than they loved each other.Love gives life,and not death.Romeo and Juliet immortalised their love story but not their love.Most of the critics have misunderstood this point.A true lover will never fight for the love,because the person who is ready to kill or to be killed hardly knows the divinity of love.Imagine,for a second,Romeo killed his enemies and Juliet also survived.They saved their love that does not prove that they had true love in them.They had true passion to fight for an entity called love.Having achieved success by violent means,there would be a void in their life,because they would have saved their love.Now what?You can't love the things,which you have achieved,all your life.You can love inaccessibles.Romeo and Juliet is the tragic death of love.I wish you were in my class room,and I could lecture for hours.Raja Sir. http://www.rajastories.blogspot.com
