My Ideology
Have you entered a classroom, full of hope, that the wonderful lesson you planned would inspire young minds, only to leave the classroom feeling defeated and dissatisfied? How many of us teachers think we have the goods but freeze in front of a classroom full of uncontrollable pupils giving us no chance to proceed with our work? How many of us think of giving up at the very first experience in teaching? Most of us, in fact, all of us have gone through one or another of those phases. I have had experiences which had made me feel that teaching is unrewarding. I have even felt that I should let 'sleeping dogs lie', but that inner voice inside me tells me otherwise. These are children, not ours but children left in our care. They have to be moulded, corrected, counselled, advised or punished if necessary. Basically, teachers enter a classroom to deliver lessons made interesting and comprehensible followed by exercises and homework. We feel that a sense of humour coupled with a few jokes here and there would motivate and tap student potential. I do agree that this is what we teachers are supposed to achieve to create a knowledge centred student community, yet as teachers we cannot stop at that. There is more to education than just delivering subject matter. Teachers who practise good governance command respect. Teachers who practise favouritism or relax on the regulations and rules for one's own benefits fall out of popularity. As teachers we should be tolerant, patient, unbiased, understanding, undogmatic in beliefs and approachable. We should know when a rule should be relaxed without favour or bias. As teachers, we have to abide by the principles and values laid down by the great philosophers and educators of all times, such as Plato, Socrates, Confucious, Rabindranath Tagore and Bertrand Russel. Their teachings indicate that negative influences in society are the direct impact of education imparted to the young in the home and outside the home. Negative influences therefore have no place in the schools. If they do, then they should not in any way be tolerated by the school authorities. Teachers in schools have to create an awareness in young minds that negative influences may look attractive, but they are the source of inbalance and disharmony in society, so vital for the existence of life and respect for life itself.
