Grow Tasty Mushrooms At Home !
TIPS FOR GROWING TASTY MUSHROOMS:
Growing edible oyster mushroom Pleurotus citrinopileatus, at a home garden is easy. As you know, mushroom is a fungus that grows very fast naturally. We need to grow it in a hygienic condition so that the final product is safe and tasty for human consumption.
Growth Medium:
The oyster mushroom is cultivated on beds of paddy or wheat straw. Clean dry straw is chopped into pieces of about an inch. They are put in boiling water in a drum or steamed for some time. The water is drained through sieves of a gunny bag. The wet straw is squeezed off so that the straw is just wet and not containing dripping water. The straw can be stored in disinfected gunny bags.
Mushroom seed materials:
The mushroom fungus is cultured initially and then allowed to grow on these seeds and made available in glass bottles or in small polythene bags for the growers. The mushroom seed material is called spawn and it is ready for growing on the straw medium.
Mushroom cultivation:
Polythene bags of 60cm x 30 cm are used for filling the layers of wet straw and mushroom seed materials one above the other till the end. The mouth of the polythene bag is tied with a thread. The polythene bags are punctured in some places so that the growing mushroom gets sufficient aeration. The mushroom starts growing inside the polythene bag.
In about seven days, the mushroom buds appear on the polythene surfaces and tries to come out bursting the bags. In about thirteen days, the mushrooms grow profusely and come out of the bags. The oyster mushrooms are white leaf like growing on the stem.
Harvesting of mushroom:
The oyster mushrooms can be harvested by plucking the meaty leaf like portions. They can be harvested from the bundles of straw after thirteen days. The mushroom grows naturally after the first harvest.
Again the straw bundle is ready with buds of mushrooms in another seven days. You can continue harvesting of mushrooms for 30 to 45 days. They are simply washed and dried in shades before packing or cooking.
Good in taste and biting sense!
The oyster mushroom is meaty and tasty. It tastes like chicken and goes to make variety of dishes in cooking.
