The Boatman

It so happened that a learned intellectual and philosopher was returning back to the city, when he had to cross a river so as to reach the other side. Being an elite gentleman and learned too he was in a passion of ego. He asked the boatman, whether he had any knowledge of History, to which he replied in negative. He then asked the boatman whether he had any knowledge of Geography, to which the boatman’s reply was again negative.

The philosopher at this stage again asked him if he had any knowledge of Mathematics or Science, the boatman’s answer was again the same. He however asked the gentleman, “Babuji, Why are you asking such questions, I am an illiterate person?” at this the philosopher remarked in vanity, “Oh my dear boatman, You have wasted all your life.”

Just then when they were conversing, some dark clouds converged on the river and it began to rain heavily with the strong winds blowing. The river was in rage and it became turbulent. It was evident that the boat would soon capsize.

The boatman now asked the philosopher whether he knew swimming. The philosopher’s answer was in negative. Then the boatman jumped out of the boat saying that, “Babuji, as you do not know swimming, your life is wasted.”

The boatman swam to the shore and the vain philosopher died in the watery grave as he did not know how to swim.
