Preventing Pregnancy ; How far effective
Bimla was working as a domestic help and it was quiet difficult to manage for two square meals for her family of five. Her husband was an auto driver and was mostly out for work. The three kids were some how put to school. One day she realized that she was pregnant again and it came as a rude shock to her as a few months back she had underwent a tubectomy, with the consent of her husband. Both were in a confused state of mind when they approached the doctor again.
When operated for tubectomy the doctor had not told them about the possibility of a failure. She didn’t want to bear more children thus it was mandatory for her to report the missed menstrual cycle to the doctor.
The doctor at the hospital didn’t believe and tried to put forward his views. Bimla said that although he had told them that once the tubectomy is performed she wouldn’t conceive, yet there was an ensuing need to run to him as there were signs of delayed menstrual cycle. Thus there were only arguments and no conclusion was reachable.
Both decided to approach the court for a failure in tubectomy and seek compensation. After much legal hassles it was concluded by the court that, on the part of doctor it was his failure to warn them of the consequences of failed tubectomy and it was itself negligence and it needed to be compensated, because the couple had ended up in an unwanted pregnancy. Thus it also led to unfair trade practice on the part of the doctor.
Conclusively it seems that there is no safe way to prevent unwanted pregnancy, as most of the times most of the contraceptive measures fail. There are many barrier methods available which provide physical barrier that keep the sperm from entering the uterus.
1. Most commonly used are the male and female condoms.
2. Many women get IUDs inserted. These intrauterine devices (IUD) are a small plastic device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy.
3. Some times spermicides like jellies, creams, foams, suppositories, tablets, or films that contain a sperm-killing chemical are also used to kill the spermatozoa and prevent pregnancy.
4. Hormonal contraceptives are also used to interfere with the ovulation process in the females. They deliver doses of female sex hormones that interfere with ovulation (maturation and release of an egg from the ovaries) and affect the condition of the uterine lining to prevent fertilized eggs from implanting in it.
5. Natural family planning, also called fertility awareness or the rhythm method, relies on abstinence from sexual intercourse during the most fertile phase of a woman’s menstrual cycle.
6. ‘Withdrawal’ (coitus interrupts) is the deliberate removal of the penis from the vagina just before ejaculation so that sperms are not deposited in or near the vagina.
7. ‘Abstinence’ seems to be the only alternative as it means no contact. It is the avoidance of any sexual activity that could lead to pregnancy.
