Boss from Hell : Incomplete Instructions

Boss from Hell : Incomplete Instructions

"I need you to get that thing from the person at that place - right away!"

This is the boss who gives you sketchy details or direction, then can't understand why he (she) never gets the things he wants. Despite trying your best to interpret his needs, things inevitably go awry. The obvious solution, of course, is to simply ask him to clarify. But this can become tricky if you don't do it the right way. For example, if you just say, "So boss, what person, place and thing would you be referring to?", some might become embarrassed, or perceive it as confrontational. Neither of these are good things, and could easily cause him to become defensive, and make it seem like it's your fault that you couldn't read his mind.
Here are two good approaches to use:

a. Let him know that the reason you are asking clarifying questions is because you want to make sure you get things right. It's harder for a boss to complain about an employee trying to get things right.

b. Instead of using open-ended questions such as, "What 'person' were you referring to?" use choice questions: "Sorry boss, I just want to make sure I get this right - did you mean Anne or Tom?"

This approach gets your boss to clarify, but sends the positive message that you are at least trying to read his mind.
