Parenting in Modern Times

Gone are the days when young children were given home made delicious food, exclusively prepared by their moms, to be eaten as mid day meal at school. Today it is more of an extravagance seen while schooling children. Too many parties, excessive laundering of parent’s money, too much pocket money and lesser attention towards studies is the main consideration now a days.

There are often parents seen cribbing about how difficult it has become to nurture a child. Perhaps it is the unending woes which add to the list as the child grows older. But have we ever given a serious thought to this issue?

Right from the birth of a child, it is the worry of schooling which arises and becomes a bone of contention for many a parent. Putting a child in a good school or in a good college is considered as some kind of an achievement now days. On the contrary, buying them a motor cycle or a car, giving them lots of pocket money and letting them have their will and way just adds to the problem.

The very basics of childhood are love care and attention and good companionship, which are lacking today. Perhaps these should be given top priority by the parents and it would display good parenting. On the same it is not true when we say that the child has grown up and should not be much bothered about and he doesn’t need much care and attention.

Whilst the child has grown into an adult, it becomes very important for the parents to consider him to be their friend and companion in all sorts of family affairs. Their individuality should be respected and they should be given due weightage and should be treated at par with other members of the family.
