Status of Elementary Education in India

1. India maintains literacy rate at 65.3% comparable with 76% average for developing countries and 81.7% global average.
2. India is the country to one in every three illiterate persons in the globe.
3. India is abode of 34% of the world’s illiterate population followed by China.
4. India does best in enrollment at 82% ranking 94th but the drop out rates are also very high around 39.8%
5. Nearly 25% districts in India fall under the low literacy districts.
6. Only 53% of all habitations have a primary school
7. Only 22% habitations, on an average enjoy an upper primary school in a 3 km periphery
8. As per 2001 census there are 12666377 child labours in the country that are excluded from mainstream of education.
9. 33% schools lack blackboards and 65.4% lack basic material
10. Only one in six rural schools is equipped with toilet facilities in general
11. 54% schools don’t have drinking water facility
12. 72% schools don’t have a library
13. 12% schools are being run by a single teacher.
