English in Bangladesh

bniamin's picture

From class one, children of Bangladesh are duely forced to go through the syllabus of English decorated for them. But it's a matter of great regret that the authors have decorated the syllabus with a view to learning English,a language, but more than 95% of guardians motivate their children to hold a salubrious score in the subject English but not in the languge English! Yes,in Bangladesh,English is an academic subject, not a language. I've asked once a college student that "How much numbers have u gathered in your latest English exam?",he replied me "91 out of 100". It's exactly a grand score but regretfully he was unable to carry on a single conversation via English. Then I asked him that "What does indicate the score 91 out of 100,actually?". He replied,"It indicates that I'm an expert user of English, but in practical I'm quite unable to drive even a single conversation orally via English with a foreigner or an expert". I asked,"So why do you study English,to pass exams or being voluble over the language English?",he replied,"Actually,if I want to practice it for practical purpose, then my college syllabus must be ignored as the fluency comes orally, not in writing a lot". I suggested him "See,you have a viva voce system in the subjects Physics,Chemistry,Biology...etc,but not in essential one named English, you should write a written complain to your education board so that they come in touch with that problems". He replied,"Bangladesh is monopolized by so-called superiors with white hair,we are not much welcome making regulatory suggestion". I said it is your bad luck,my bad luck, bad luck of my younger brothers and sisters, for nothing, only due to "Bangladeshi By Birth"!
