Good Songs Never Die
I now have proof that a really good song just never dies. Other people take advantage of them. Here in the Caribbean we have a lot of gangster rap or ' dub ' artists and the taxis and bars downtown Port of Spain specialise in playing these artists. In loud and rasping speakers these songs blast at you wherever you go. Roadside CD pushers play them from carts and cars pass by with the music blazing from their windows. I often wonder what defines music when I here all this. The songs have no rhythm or pattern. Most of the time the singer shouts or blurts his lyrics. The voices are hoarse and the actual music loud and bang on the ears. In spite of this I have found that there are songs I do like that are made up in this way. That is when an old standard or hit is adapted by these awfull artists and made over into rap or dub. I like these because they sound like a makeover of something good and the goodness rubs off. If, in this ruptured world of ours a Godawfull musician can take and old song and sound good with it then Good Old Songs can truly never die.
