Customs Officers in Trinidad

Customs Officers in Trinidad have it good. They make overtime packages that are reputed to build them houses. They also work on levels we the plebs don't really understand. I work in the shipping industry and just three hours ago went to Customs House ( their home and habitat for talk and business ) to deliver the overtime slip entitling one such officer to a replenishment for this week when he cleared a tug and barge better known to those who know these vesssels as TIN and TINCAN. He wasn't there but the door to his office was open, the TV was on ( a thriller to enjoy at 1.00 pm on a workday ) so I enquired from a fellow officer who was drifting off to sleep at his desk in the adjoining office where he was. The reply was that he would be back today. So I went into town and returned at 3.00 pm - a short while ago. The TV was still on and the door still open, the gentleman was still not there. So I left and while in the elevator going down to the street to return to my workplace the same Customs Officer from the adjoining office entered the elevator. He looked at me and asked if I was annoyed. I said, well, he's been gone all afternoon. ( The proper language is important here, disrespect in a capital offense ) and the officer explained that he could be away on official business. ( A standard and ancient excuse ) I left and returned to my workplace. Tomorrow I will have to try again. Otherwise the absent officer could call my office and complain that we are not doing the necessary and threaten to withold services. This is a true experience. It happened today.
