POETRY

POETRY
Poetry has been differently described by different scholars and critics. Each definition highlights certain important aspects of poetry and no definition so far given seems comprehensive. One of the popular definitions of poetry is that it is a superb revelation of truth in a charming language. The Shelleyan observation is that it is `the best words in the best order'. Obviously, all these definitions point out the fact that the language of poetry must be an embellished one; it must be decked with all sorts of possible linguistic ornaments.
This ornamentation of language is effected by the use of appropriate figures of speech. Great Alamkarikas like Bhamaha, Dandin and Bhoja have commented on the elegance and force that language achieves when invested with Alankaras. Anandhavardhana has pointed out that the figures of speech become the very soul of poetry when they are appropriately used. Abinavagupta points out that Alankaras are not mere external adornment but they become the very element of the innate beauty of poetry. All these great scholars do testify to the laudable aesthetic function that the Alankaras perform .
