Feminism

Feminism
Feminism developed as a movement in literature as a result of the centuries - old struggle for the liberation of women. There are certain common assumptions that form the basis of this movement. The basic concept is the affirmation of the equality of the sexes and a strong protest against sexual discrimination and the subjugation of women by men. Western civilization is largely patriarchal - male centered and controlled and organised in such a way as to subordinate women to men in all cultural domains-familial, religious, political, social, and artistic. What is more, while sexual differences are anatomical, gender differences are the creations of the male dominated society. Accordingly, the male is expected to be active, adventurous, heroic, rational and creative. But the female ought to be obedient, docile, timid, motional and passive. Consequently, in literature, men are represented as the embodiment of heroic virtues while women occupied only a subordinate position. Feminism is a movement which developed in literature to register protest against such sexual discriminations and unjust and partisan attitude.
