Seeking Happiness of Life

For a friendless man the attainment of wealth, power and honour is of little value, since he aspires for true friendship and seeks solace in a soothing talk with some one. Such worldly wonders and possessions contribute to our happiness most by enabling us to do good to others and strangely if all those whom we are able to help and benefit are strangers, we take far less pleasure in our beneficence than if it were our known persons or friends, whose happiness is dear to our own.

For once the great Roman orator, Cicero in his oration on friendship, remarked that, with truth it increases and diminishes misery by the doubling of our joy and the dividing of our grief. When we do well in our endeavors it is delightful to have friends who are so proud of our success that they receive as much pleasure from it as we do ourselves.

When we do some good deed or our duty, inspite of temptation, there prevails a mental satisfaction which is obtained from the approval of our consciences, which is heightened by some praise by our friends. It gives us encouragement and a thrill of achieving something through work for others. Thus in every case our joys are multiplied and increase the more we share ourselves with others, selflessly and endlessly.
