Vinegar for Weight Loss

You have used vinegar to make pickles, to dress salads, and perhaps to remove stains. But to lose weight? Yes, that’s possible too, according to a few anecdotal evidences.

What Is Apple Cider Vinegar?
Vinegar is produced by fermentation. While vinegar can be made from any fruits, vegetables, and grains, apple cider vinegar comes from pulverized apples. Following fermentation, the sugar in the apple juice is broken down by bacteria and yeast and is first turned into alcohol, and then to vinegar, or acetic acid.

Used in folk medicines, though its efficacy has not been conclusively proved, apple cider vinegar can be used to kill head lice, reverse aging, ease digestion, and wash "toxins" from the body. But certain medical uses of vinegar have been vindicated by scientific studies too — like lowering glucose and cholesterol levels.

For thousands of years, vinegar has also been used for weight loss. The combination of the acidic vinegar and fruit pectin is perhaps the reason for its "fat burning effects".

Dr. Andrew Weil says “all you need to do to lose weight is to take one, two, or three teaspoons of apple cider vinegar before every meal, starting with one teaspoon and then working up to two or three. I understand that taking more than three teaspoons isn't supposed to lead to better results. Probably more than three teaspoons is more than any dieter could reasonably stomach. Eat moderate portions at meals, avoid snacking, and wait for the apple cider vinegar to reduce your hunger and food cravings.” (Source: drweil.com)

Here are a few points to keep in mind.

  • Apple cider vinegar is highly acidic. It could damage the tooth enamel and the tissues in your throat and mouth.
  • Long-term use of apple cider vinegar could cause low potassium levels and lower bone density. If you already have low potassium or osteoporosis, talk to your doctor before using apple cider vinegar.
  • Apple cider vinegar could theoretically interact with diuretics, laxatives, and medicines for diabetes and heart disease.
