Burns come in 3 degrees of severity
A First-degree burn effects only the outermost layer of skin. First degree burns can be vary painful. But most of the time do not require medical intervention. A typical sunburn is a good example of a first degree burn.
A second-degree burn occurs when the burn penetrates deeper into the skin. Second-degree burns can cause sever pain. Anytime a burn blisters it has become a second-degree burn. Any second degree burn that covers an area of skin larger then a quarter should receive medical attention.
Third-degree burns are the worst type of burn. Third-degree burns penetrates into the 3rd layer of skin and beyond. Third degree burns often are not painful because the burn is so deep that it destroys the nerves that transmit pain signals to the brain. All Third-degree burns are medical emergencies that always require professional care which often includes hospitalization.
