QUALITIES NEEDED IN A LEADER
In India leaders appear to grow on trees. Anybody with the gift of the gab assumes the role of a man-driver. And our people are such gulls that they would follow anyone. Even the sheep know their shepherd, but not our people. The leader may change his label overnight, He may go to bed as a Lok Dal man and wake up next morning as a Congress Sanghite, but we worship him bindly. We are really the proverbial dumb driven cattle.
We lack good leaders and that accounts for our deterioration. A good leader is hard to find. To be a leader is to be wedded to a cause, a principle. Mahatma Gandhi was wedded to truth and non-violence. He swore unswerving loyalty to them. There were big trials and tribulations, but Gandhiji stood firm as a rock. His life was really a series of experiments with truth.
Another quality needed in a leader is that he should be a genuine parh-shower. He should have the courage to act on what he preaches. Most leaders in our country are hypocrites. Their actions belie their professions.
Many a Khadi-clad leader is seen preaching the gospel of simplicity and Gandhian austerity to followers while in, his own house there is hardly a luxury which does not abound. Many a wine-bibber preach temperance from the house-tops and many a black marketer waxes eloquent on the glories of patriotism. They have made our country the land of misery and hunger. A leader should be sincere in what he preaches.
A leader should identify himself with his people. He should meet them, mix with them, be one of them. He should understand their difficulties and problems and do his best to remove them. Gandhiji resolved to wear loin cloth only because he saw that his countrymen went about naked or half naked. Thereby he identified himself with the poorest of the, poor, the humblest of the .humble.
A leader should be able to rise to the occasion. It is only in times of distress and emergency that a leader’s, mettle is tested. Boat can sail smoothly in placid waters but it is a tough ship that can weather a storm. Such a leader was a Teacher.
