Having a big focus in life

It is a great matter of pride that today's youngsters are now more informed than ever before, thanks to the internet revolution, and to other means of information available to them.

However,it is somewhat worrying that many lakh a firm focus in life. They drift from one job to another, and want the best of the world, within a very short time. The spend a lot, never save for their tomorrow, and are fairly poor in understanding trends in the global market.

For example, those who now work in the BPOs ought to realise that the life of their organizations is extremely limited, and in a decade from now, when China and Bangladesh and even Malaysia quote far cheaper rates, the Indian BPO industry is likely to go through its worst phase ever.

So, it is wise to upgrade one's skills and enter into the mainstream IT sector, take a dip in salary, work with relatively unknown organizations if need be, and then gather that vital experience.

Such a trend applies for every single job. For instance,in HR it is wise to have a big all-round experience of working in hard-core industrial relations, wage and salary admistration, routine administration concerned with statutory matters related to labour, and also the HR sub-systems of Performance appraisal, Career Planning, Training and development and so on.

This is the only way in which one can be successful in one's career. Having a big focus means having an all-round knowledge of what is going on around and how to make the most of any given situation. For instance, it is wise to invest in real estate, in places that are even sixty kilometers away from the main city. The reason? Excellent roads and investment made by State Governments in providing such roads today, will pave the way for the growth of satellite towns in such places, in about a decade from now.

Similarly, providing for the best of English medium education for one's children is no more a matter of choice. It is the only competitive advantage that children will get to have in the years ahead, for, there will be a huge demand for people who can really read, speak and write in good English.

Having a big focus also means that we need to insure ourselves against many risks in life -- be it life insurance, or health insurance, or whatever. For, today's complex work environments induce a great deal of stress that leads to a huge variety of health problems, at a relatively young age.

We need to understand the world, and learn to have a focus in whatever we do. We cannot fritter away our resources in things that we need not do. For instance, wasting a huge amount of money on correspondence courses of all kind, will only satisfy our ego, but such courses do not do any good to our career.

Similarly, it is not wise to ape the rich and spend a huge amount of money on conspicuous consumption. If we are in trouble, and particularly in financial trouble, not a single soul will come forward to help -- be it friends, or relatives, or neighbours or whomsoever. Learning from one's life experiences is a must. One cannot waste one's lifetime on useless things and regret later.

One important aspect. Absence of debt is itself the best tonic that one can give to himself or herself. Debts ruin a person, and cause any amount of worries to the person and his family. It is wise to live within one's means, and never fall a prey to temptations.

Focus is what is needed in life -- be it in careers, in personal life, in official life, or whatever. Life without focus will mean that one merely adds years to one's life.
