Family Tree..

A mature, balanced and responsible person that my elder brother was, it was very clear from his mind as he tended to the duties of the entire household after the death of our father. I was often surprised on how he could take care of all – his family, land, cattle and agriculture. Very carefully my mother had nurtured the family tree. The three branches were me, my elder brother and the second born brother. Now that the family property and land was to be divided among the three brothers, the tree was going to be felled, right in front of my mother.

The poor old lady felt too bad and it was perhaps too tragic an event for her to bear. She was shocked to hear the arguments between my elder and middle sister in laws. Rather they were so easily overshadowed by the money concerns and were eager for the partition to take place.

Unable to bear the trauma of split of family, mother stayed away from all this. I was living in the city, when all this took place. One day I was invited to take part in the division of the ancestral property through a letter of elder brother.

A deep sense of guilt overtook me for not writing letters back home and for doing not much for my elder brother for his immense selfless service. As expected on reaching home there was no one to receive me except my mother who always loved me like a small child.

A deep fear of separation filled me as she was looking like an ashen corpse that night. The heavens befell that night as the next morning we found the poor old lady, my mother dead in her sleep.
