Bohol, A Dwelling Place

Ever since I was on my elementary days, I have always been dreaming to be in a place where I could lay down and feel the coldness of the crashed ice even though my deepest part of the skin, the subcutaneous. A place where I could wear a thick coat, and get the friction of my hand and blow like an Eskimo. I guess everybody knows what where I am pointing, a place where we can exactly earn dollars. But years have passed I came to a realization that anything you feel good is good that is when I went to that spot.
It’s really beyond my knowledge of going to the wonderful place of Bohol. A three days vacation to this province is just a surprised gift from my mother although there was no occasion to be celebrated. I have really no idea on what this place does could I really enjoy. That time, I thought we were just going to our own province just to visit our relatives there, but it was surprisingly that I was wrong. As I went down to alight the bus, I felt the fresh air penetrating to my skin more than the crash ice can do. I ran to the near rocks of small hills hanging its colors from lighter brown to a darker like a chocolate and it was popular known as the “chocolate hills”. That time I felt I was on the world of illusion. I hugged my mother as a sign of appreciation and thank her for the wonderful gift that she gave to me. I was so happy that moment while I was looking on the hills with different shapes.
Afterwards, we walked towards the forest and you know what I saw, the smallest monkey in the world, the famous tarsier. It was true that the tarsier has huge and bulging eyes when you look nearer on it and it is like an owl roaming in the middle of the night and looking for its prey.
As I observed the forest, the cut trees brought my attention. So I asked the tourist guide about it. And he just told me, that it is because of the illegal loggers and the corporation businesses of wood furniture’s and different papers. He also told me that because of loosing trees, the tarsier and other animals are also in danger that’s why it was considered to be “endangered species”. After I discovered about it, I felt pity because I believed that this is the one of the many wealth here in the Philippines that every Filipino could be proud of. The governments have something to do about it rather just making a deal with the different corporations who neglect that they also have a point in taking care for our environment for our environment and also its significant parts. Not only with that, the government have also something to contribute in the development of sustainable production systems it’s conservation and use of biological diversity, reduced pollution of soil, air, and water and in the preservation of our cultural heritage and management of the natural’s environment’s cultural values.
Let’s imagine if the trees are already gone, where the animals especially the tarsier can live there will just the stray on a stray island. We are created by God not to be “Shiva” on our own home but a “Vishnu”, as a maintainer and developer. We have to do our individualized responsibilities and then you to do something about this problem we are facing.
Many believed we couldn’t solve the environmental problems because of the powerful influence of vested interest. Obviously we can’t solve this problem unless we meet interest directly in the political arena and demonstrate that survival. The massive grass most political movement, which we now all growing can bring this abort. One of the major changes in this decade can come from an ecological political movement that bridges the gap between left and right and young and old. This movement will get the people together behind candidates who pay for healthier environment and will turn aid of office those who only pretend to do so. The thing people must realize above all is that the solution to our environment crisis involved simple, small measures by many people in accelerating sequence. The changes needed will require a conversion like that require to win World War II and then to reconvert to peace. I know it’s very hard because until now, place as consider as a dream. But bear in our mind that the reward is worth this kind of effort. Consider the alternative and let’s make Bohol and other beautiful places in our country as a better dwelling place.
