Human Rights or a Humane society

Human Rights are as important and essential for human beings like fresh water and air to live a dignified life. But Human Rights become meaningful only if the society that needs it is Humane enough and conducive for a dignified life.
Intolerence and belligerence against fellow human beings, lack of compassion for the weak and the downtrodden, insensitivity towards the unempowered sections of the society make Human rights meaningless and unsustainable.

Law abiding citizens only deserve Human Rights and if brutality is the only language understood by the people Human Rights cannot be claimed by such a Society. If students do not respect teachers and teachers have to take the extreme step of caning themselves to bring discipline in a classroom, if traffic jams created by haphazard parking of vehicles owned by educated people in public roads need to be removed by cranes, does such Society deserve Human Rights. If individuals wait for Human Rights to be showered upon them by the State and remains totally oblivious of the Rights of other fellow Human beings and remain totally inured of, and insensitive to the duties towards their fellow human beings, nobody can get a dignified life, which is the true essence of Human Rights.

There are institutions to protect the Human Rights flowing from the state. There are also institutions to protect individuals from abuse of his rights by another individual. But education and right upbringing of children can perhaps make us more Humane and sensitise us to live a more dignifed life.
