When Animals Become Mutants!
Often mistakes occur by nature. Any alteration in the structure of a gene results in a mutation. Animals are known to be mutants when they show some different kind of formation from the rest of their species. Perhaps it is a process by which the hereditary properties of some of the reproductive cells in the animals are altered. Or we can say that mutations occur during DNA replication, when the chemical structure of genes undergoes random modifications.
In nature these changes can take place spontaneously and unpredictably. But they are rare and little is known about this cause.
Now a days often we do see animal mutants like a cow with five legs or a snake with two heads or a lizard with two tails and a rabbit with two heads. The most common causes of animals producing mutants are intake of chemical substances and exposure to radiation. Perhaps radiation is a rapidly increasing hazard.
Animals born from parents who have suffered the effects of more than normal radiation are invariably mutants. Cows have been known to have a fifth leg. In the pacific islands, where nuclear tests have been conducted, there are fish which have forgotten how to swim and have been found on land.
Mutation has been seen in birds too. Some lost there power to fly. Some birds may have only one wing, while some may have two heads. Turtle mutants are unable to find way back to sea on birth and consequently die.
Animals’ mutants have long been described in history of Greek and Indian Mythology, when they frightened people. Mutants such as dogs and horses with two heads were believed to have magical powers.
