Leadership is all about performance

The late Peter Drucker, possibly the best Management writer who ever lived on this earth, summed it beautifully, when he talked about leadership: it was he who said that leadership is all about performance. For, in the ultimate analysis, any leader has to perform, has to deliver.

Of course, the context will vary from situation to situation. For instance, in the case of the Freedom struggle, Mahatma Gandhi was able to rally all his countrymen around one central message of non-violence. Hence Gandhi taken to violence, we would have ended up in utter confusion and all the other superpowers would have exploited us to the maximum extent possible -- our country would have been divided into four or more parts.

Instead, realising that he needed a method that would draw the attention of the whole world, he adopted non-violence, which actually put the British on the defensive. He then concentrated on the nitty-gritty, in the sense that he was able to identify clear action like the Salt stayagraha, boycot of foreign goods and the like.

The same thing is true of any business leader. He or she would have to identify a grand Vision, around which a whole lot of people would rally. It is then important that the leader gets to focus on what should be done to actually put the Vision into action, that is, take all the steps to see that the Vision is translated into reality. In business management jargon, this is called "strategy", the only purpose of which is to be taller than the competition, that is, ahead of the competition.

In other words, the organization should be able to take all the necessary steps to ensure that it atains and sustains what is called as a "viable and sustainable competitive advantage".

Leaders of organizations such as Infosys Technologies, ICICI Bank, NDDB,Reliance Industries, BHEL,the Tatas and hundreds of similar organizations have always concentrated on performance. They have understood the value of creation of wealth, which actually creates millions of jobs indirectly and directly. It is this single-minded focus that has always driven their efforts. It is this focus that has enabled them to make a great effort at making their organizations, truly world-class.

The single obsession towards organization building can be seen in whatever the leader does. For example, the founder and Chief of the Infosys Technolgies, who now calls himself as Mentor,
Shri Narayamurthy, took a very tough call when he sought to buy the shares of the other founders, when the organization was going through troubled times. Since then, the organization has grown to be an IT giant in its own right.

What make it happen? His ability to see the future, his ability to tolerate all that is trouble in the short run and then see the benefits of organization building in the long run. His ability to do this, made all the other founders co-operate with him, and today, Infosys, as they say, is the benchmark for the entire Indian industry. No wonder, it is among the best employers to work for, across all industries.

The leader should be inspiring, and should focus on motivation people, which is extremely important. He should be able to make his people aunderstand that their co-operation would go a long way in making the organization a very viable one, no matter what the circumstances are. This is the core idea of leadership. This is the essence of leadership.

While people focus is important, understanding the market dynamics, the needs of the customers, the ways and means of catering to them and servicing them, are all very important. The leader should be nimble-footed and flexible. He should understand the need to serve the larger society as well. For example, ICICI Bank has set up a foundation for inclusive growth, through which it is providing loan facities to the rural masses, and helping them to stand on their own. ICICI Bank is firmly convinced that there is a real fortune that is available at the bottom of the pyramid.

Similarly, there are several other initiatives that need to be taken by a leader. The basics are also very important. There are several leaders who give utmost importance to ensure that the quality of subsidised food is very good. If this is not good, employees soon get de-motivated. Employees also crave for recognition at work. If the work itself is not interesting, the employee simply looses interest. He often gets to see the leader as a sort of father figure. This is an extremely important aspect of leadership.

The leader is expected to perform even under the most adverse circumstances. The leaders shluld be able to predict the future. The leader should be able to understand the different variables that will make the organization a very sustainable one in the future. For instance, several business houses have wisely invested in the booming retail market, where the learning curve is very small and the market is easily understandable.

Any leader will be respected, only if he or she is able to perform and deliver the goods. He or she will be admired and respected, mainly on this score. Let us all understand this basic fact about leadership.

...But not allways...

Sometimes the plitical leaders make huge mistakes, for example by starting devastating wors. But in bussines, as you said, is performance. Anyway, the succes and the performance is not always a fact. A real leader is the one that accept the defeat.

Leadership and performance

Yes, I agree with you. One cannot always expect to succeed in everything, more so, in business. It is always true that only those with a strong sence of right and wrong will succeed in life. For example, one has to accept that every business cannot show an year-on-year increase in profits, and this is more true of commodities like cement. Inspite of making profits, Larsen and Toubro made a quiet exit from its cement business since it did not fit its core portfolio. This is the secret of leadership -- identifying the right things to do, and doing it so fast.

Hindustan Unilever does it very often. If a particular brand of any of its consumer products does not sell well, they simply junk it and get on to do something far better. They have grown several "power" brands. This is the secret of superior performance, but it always led by a visionary leader.

correct

how will your people obey your rules if you yourself doesn't? i agree with you. leadership is all about performance.

Walking the talk

Yes, I agree with you. If we do not practice what we preach, we will loose all credibility. If that happens, none will respect us, and this will include our own family members. Let us learn to respect this aspect of life, so that we can be leaders in our own way.

Leadership is really about "Performance"

everything is true...

for a everyone will doubt on whatever you say but they will always believe on everything you do... keep posting great articles... =)

Leadership and performance

I totally agree with you. As you would have noticed, several great men and women have been respected as leaders for the sheer reason that they have done something that no one else have done. They have been role models for others, and for entire societies. This is exactly what is performance all about, as leadership is essentially an influence process, and true leaders can emerge in any situation, based on performance.

Thank you for your piece of encouragement. I shall continue to write such articles based on my reading and my experience.

About leadership

Thank you Madhumalini, and welcome to this website. I guess you are new to this website. Well, I have been writing all articles based on my experience of having worked for over twenty five years in different organizations, and this includes a stint as a member of the research team at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedbabad.

I have seen and worked with some of the great business leaders of our times. They have always stood by some values, and have been instrumental in giving their organizations a grand Vision, around which they have always built some amazing guiding principles. There is always a lot to learn from such experiences. I will positively visit your blog and offer my views. Through a private message, please do tell me, what you do, and where you live.

I work as Manager - HR with the Foundry Division of an organization called Brakes India Limited, at Sholinghur, which is around 60 kms from Vellore.

i think

denzyao:

i think good leadership comes hand in hand also with good management and a knowledge about the principles and concept of leadership and managament!

Leaqdership and Management

I agree with you. In today's globalized world, every leader -- including political leaders -- require a great amount of Management knowledge. For instance, our political leaders have to devise ways and means to make our Indian industry and business strive to become extremely cost-competitive, when compared to say, China. This is as regards the policy framework, at the national level.

At the organizational level, any leader, at any level needs to explore creative ways of optimising all the available resources to make the organization not only cost-competitive, but also viable in terms of a sustained competitive advantage. This is the main task of the leader. Thanks a lot for your views. I have merely highlighted some points connected with your view.

aspiration to be a great leader

Many aspire to be a great one. But only few are chosen to have it. It's always good to be a leader. But it's much better to have a good and well-performing leader.

Aspiring to be a leader

Who can stop aspirations? None. However, we always need performing leaders, who can easily understand what it takes to stay in business, what it takes to make the most of any given situation, and to make the organization a viable one through leadership based on values. We have glorious examples like Infosys Technologies and Wipro, that have shown the world what such leadership is all about. Let us learn from such leadership.

Respect for a leader...

This respect comes when the leader is open to respect his subjects. He is not just inspiring but has to follow certain rules and leave his footprints on the sands of time.A good leader is always remembered by the generations to follow.

This article requires 10 stars.

Best wishes!

Qualities of a great leader

Thank you so much, Uma Madam. You have said it so well. Yes, every great leader is remembered for several generations. Right from the best of US and Russian Presidents to our own Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru and Patel and Rajaji and Kamaraj, lived lives that gave away so many lessons for others to follow, to emulate. And ideals to cherish. It is indeed sad that the industrial revolution has swallowed this greatness in each of our lives who lived after Indepedence, with the sole exceptions being leaders who are in the limelight for social causes. I was wondering that I have not heard from you for such a long time. It is great to get your cyrstal views and your words of encouragement, for which, I would give not ten, but twenty stars. You are the best writer here, in my opinion and hats off to you.
