The latter half of the twentieth centaury may be, to a large extent termed the electronic age. In a modern world marked by hurry and bustle and ceaseless activity the physical efforts of man have gone to the background and he has become more and more dependent on m machines for his everyday activities. From the house wife in the kitchen, to the executive in the industry everyone looks upon machine as an able assistant. One of these is the electronic Computer.
The electronic computer is one of the dearest children of modern technology. It is a man-made brain that is found in almost every industry, in every office and every educational institution. Gone are the days when children in schools and grown up students in colleges were required to remember tables and complex mathematical formulae. "These are now given to such students by the calculator. The art of writing has been replaced by the typewriting machine. Such are the uses to which modern inventions have been put. The latest to the Gallery of Invented Articles is the computer, " The Mechanical Brain ".
When the computer is fed, it sorts out, stores and gives information on a variety of subjects. Many are the uses to which it is put. Problems of a complete nature are solved and it is even used to drive machines. It has been found so useful that the Banking profession is thinking of introducing the computer in every aspect of its activity. It is felt that the maximum `customer' can be got through the use of the computer. Railways, factories, industrial houses and other institution use it much.
The greatest advantage in the use of computer is that it saves a lot of time and energy of man. Much time that could be spend in research work over a long period is saved through using the computer. It is also beneficial in development projects.
Computer science has become a new branch of science. It has opened out new avenues for young men and women to such an extent that there is a view that the fundamentals should be taught even to school-going children. It is not as if the computer cannot make mistakes. Since it is mechanical devise, it is also fallible. The efficiency of this device will also depend upon correct programming. If the programming is incorrect, the correctness of the results cannot be guaranteed. It is a marvel of modern world.
The computer has become such an integral part of life to-day that it has also brought in certain disadvantages. If computers are used to an unlimited extent it may result in greater unemployment. Manual labor being replaced by machine power has already brought about several inconvenience and disadvantages. Computerization is yet one more addition. The question arises whether the computer would be a master or slave of Man. It is a ticklish question, for it depends upon the manner in which it is used. In all probability it may go the way of all the machines invented so far.
It is a common sight to see the plight of the housewife when the gas cylinder gets exhausted. She feels as if she has lost an arm and she heaves a sigh of relief only on hearing the ring of the gas-man at the door. As may be understood, the art of (hand) writing is almost lost with the use of the typewriter. When an author or a journalist finds that his machine has gone wrong he feels like a fish out of water. In general, man has become so much dependent upon modern scientific implements. If the domestic circuit goes off for even a short time, one feels almost like a blind man in the other types of lights used. In other words, till now it has been found that the machine has almost become the master of man. It will not be much of a surprise if the computer also holds sway over man in future. Computer in a few years time might turn out to be a device which also enslaves man.
