Do Computers Mar Handwriting?
“Poor handwriting is a sign of incomplete education.” These are the words said by one of the greatest personalities of the last century. Yes you are right I am talking about Mahatma Gandhi, the great educationist, freedom fighter and social reformer. With computer boom taking the teenagers today with a rage, it is to be seen how well they can write their documents in hand. Perhaps today Computers have taken a toll of the handwriting of the younger generation who are computer savvy. Moreover educationists and academicians have also stressed the need for a good handwriting, but the handwriting of computer users have started deteriorating with the computer boom.
The teachers and child psychologists have an altogether different opinion, while a majority of them opine that computer savvy people would longer write a good handwriting, while others said that computers would not have much impact on handwriting of students. ‘Handwriting of school going children is certainly adversely affected by the latest fad to work for long hours on computers’, say some.
With the introduction of computer education at school and extended use at home has resulted in lesser use of hand to jot down the ideas and thoughts. Buying the personal computers for kids have worsened the problem for many parents. It is also felt by some caring parents that computers should be discarded for spoiling the handwriting.
Another factor which goes against the computers is the writing speed. Those who are dependent on computers for all their work fall out of practice to write in good speed. This has had often created problems for students appearing in exams. Due to too much dependence on these machines most of them fail to complete the question paper during the stipulated time period. It is highly felt that the overall personality of a student is also affected due to the introduction of computer education at an early stage of education such as pre-nursery level.
