The Goodness of Kiwi Fruit
Kiwi Fruit, is common name for a southeast-Asian vine, also called Chinese gooseberry and yangtao, and is an edible fruit. The small, oval fruit has a thin brownish-green skin with a fuzzy surface. The flesh, which is a distinctive green, with tiny purplish seeds surrounding a white core, may be eaten raw or cooked. The fruit is extensively grown all over the world. These cylindrical fruit are covered with a light brown fuzzy skin, which looks rather dull in comparison with its beautiful bright greener interior. The flavor is delicate yet refreshing and tangy.
THE GOODNESS OF KIWI FRUIT: From the nutrition point of view it contains potassium and vitamin C. it is also a rich source of Vitamin A and E, and its black seeds can be crushed to produce kiwi fruit oil, which is very rich in Alfa-Linoleic acid (an important Omega-3 essential fatty acid). Studies have proved that kiwi fruit is useful in improving conditions of asthmatic children and decrease the probability of colon cancer by providing a good amount of dietary fiber. Some people may be allergic to kiwi, as they contain the protein dissolving enzyme actinidin. There can be itching of the tongue, mouth, lips and palate.
BEST BUY: Choose the plump unwrinkled fruit with unblemished skins. K iwis are ripe when they yield to gentle pressure like a ripe pear. Yet it is advisable to buy unripe fruit from the market and ripe at home by just storing at room temperature. But be careful to not to ripen the fruit in the same tray where other fruit are kept as the enzymes in kiwi tend to ripen others very quickly. When stored at cool places it keeps for weeks.
HOW TO SERVE: As the skin is edible but of fuzzy texture it is not pleasant so it is best to peel the fruit with a small sharp knife. They make an attractive addition to fruit salads, open fruit tarts and can be pureed as well. This fruit contains enzymes that make an excellent meat tenderizer. So rub the peeled skin or slices onto meat and it will become tender enough to be grilled.
