You must be familiar with Hallmarking:-Part II

Orchid Life's picture

Now that you got a brief idea about a Hallmarked jewellery let’s now go a little deeper about the process of Hallmarking. How is a jewellery Hallmarked?

You all must have seen the gold biscuits that are available in the market. These gold biscuits are available in 22karat and 24 karats. (Karat is the unit that is used to measure the purity of gold. ) In the process of making jewellery one uses the 24 Karat biscut which has the gold purity of 999.9. This is then treated with a percentage of copper and silver (or other metals) to bring down the purity to 22 karat with a purity of 916.0, or any other desired purity by using the proper combination of other metals to it.
So now we have the desired purity of gold made from combining other metals to the pure gold. This gold is used for making jewellery and this is taken for the process of Hallmarking to the Assay Centre by the jeweller claiming a particular purity where the jewellery is Hallmarked. From there the process of hallmarking starts. The Whole lot of jewellery is considered as a single lot and its put for the process to undergo.

There are two types of checking a jewellery to be Hallmarked – Destructive and non destructive type. As the name suggests in the first type the jewellery is destroyed or melted and the second type makes sure the jewellery is not destroyed.
