The Mystic Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar

Shiva descends from Kailasa:

on the chessboard that is Kashi

throws skulls for dice.

Unmoved, Parvati watches.

Her breasts glow with the bronze of passion,

obscure a thousand bells.

Traveling through the panoramic views of Mount Kailash one finds several panoramic views of the scenic beauty of the mountains, that the sense fails to imagine and capture its beauty. Several travelers have recorded in their divine attempts the pristine and virgin beauty of the holy pilgrimage to the Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, but these sacred places are now under strain from regular human activities going on there in the form of pilgrimage and holistic vacation.

It is situated in an Autonomous Region of China. At a height of 6,714 m (22,027 ft), The Mansarovar Lake, lying just south of Mount Kailas at 4,557 m (14,950 ft), is one of the world’s highest lakes. Mount Kailash is the highest peak in the Kailash Range of the Himalayas. The range is separated from the Great Himalayas chain by a trough that is drained in the northwest by the Sutlej River and in the southeast by the Yarlung Zangbo River (the extreme upper Brahmaputra River).Mount Kailas, which has religious significance for both Hindus and Tibetan Buddhists, is an important pilgrimage site.

For Hindus, the peak is the home of the Lord Shiva, while the Tibetan Buddhists equate the mountain with Mount Sumeru, the cosmic center of the universe and revere it since ancient times.

Lake Mansarovar is Tibet’s most venerated stretch of water. It is located in the upper Himalayas and is a holy place of pilgrimage both for the Hindus and the Buddhists. For the Hindus it has an association with the sacred and all mighty Lord Shiva and Buddhist revere it for they do ‘kora’ there. The lake which over looks the mount Kailash is supposed to be the source of origin of the river Sutlej, the Indus. The Ganges and the Brahmaputra. It is believed that only Sutlej originates from here and other rivers arise from the mount Kailash.

The serenity and locales of Kailash mount also gives us psychological insight into the minds of the Tibiteans who have lived here since ages unknown. They probably live in the higher regions and face life boldly inspite of the hardships.

The place has a medical college ‘Darchen Medical College’ to meet the needs of people. At the peak of the pilgrimage season the place wears an altogether different look. A sea of bustling visitors descends on it for benign blessings of lord Shiva.
