Lethal injection procedure in the United States

Lethal injection is by far the preferred method of execution in the United States. Unlike other methods of execution such as hanging, firing squad and the gas camber, lethal injection appears almost medical in nature.

The Lethal injection procedure involves a three drug mix given in this order all intravenously.

First Sodium thiopental is used to render the prisoner unconscious.

Second Pancuronium bromide which is a muscle relaxant that stops involuntary reactions is administered.

Third Potassium chloride is used to stop the heart and causes death.

There is a ongoing debate in the Untied States about the use of lethal injection. Some people argue that the Potassium chloride causes excruciating pain in the condemned but is not able to be seeing outwardly because of the Pancuronium bromide induced paralysis. Which they argue is in violation of the eighth amendment right against cruel and unusual punishment.
