Individual social responsibility

There is a big talk about Corporate Social Responsibility. However,there is something called Indivdual Social Resonsibility.

Let me explain. Since we have different roles to play, each of which has a big influence on the lives of not only our family members but on the society itself, we have to have a sense of responsibility, which I would like to call as Individual Society Responsibility.For instance, as responsible fathers or mothers, it is our responsibility to teach good values to our children, even if the very values have changed over time.

For instance,even if we welcome love marriages of our sons or daughters, we should teach them to be humane, to be loving to their life partners, and take on the mantle of doing work that was hitherto considered to be the sole preserve of the wife or husband. For instance, even very senior managers consider it a great prestige to do baby-sitting at home, even if it is for a few days. This is a welcome development, and it just shows that values are changing for the good.

Similarly, if each of us can do something to flatly refuse to take home the plastic carry home bags, we would have done a great service to society.

If we can do a little bit to educate even a few on things that they do not know, we would have done something. For instance, I do take some time off to teach a few of my colleagues, on the correct way of speaking good English. Since the effort is not much, they do appreciate it all the time.

I also several others doing their own bit in some small way or the other to make the lives of several others, much happier than what it is. Several of my friends network with the non-governmental organizations to do some service on the week-ends. This can be easily done by bachelors, who can spare some time in the evenings.

Several IT professionals in the metros have joined together in small groups to contribute their might in teaching orphan children, or even the old people, in terms of some sort of adult education. What we need to do is to just imagine what can be done and how.

These are times when AIDS is not only a deadly disease,but also a social curse. If only we could network with a number of voluntary organizations to spread awareness on this disease, we would have done our bit. Very encouragingly, I now see a lot of awareness about this disease among many sections of people, and this is a great news indeed.

We could also make small social action groups, that could take up several social causes in a non-political manner. One hears of several voluntary groups, who have taken it on themselves to contribute their might in drawing the attention of the authorities towards pollution,bad condition of roads, electricity,etc., in the city of Bangalore. If only such work can be multiplied several times in each city, each of our cities will be far better to live in.

The opportunities and the avenues are so great. Indeed, sky is the limit. Let us all do our bit in our small way. I would welcome suggestions from each user, so that these can be consolidated and something can be done. What about all users of this very useful website coming together to do something for the society? Apart from writing here, can we do something, wherever we are, and still meet sometime, somewhere to share thoughts and ideas?

I think it is eminently possible to do something. Do write in with your views on how we could get going.
