"A Tribute to My Teachers !!" (Part III)

The duty of a teacher lies not only in teaching the students but also moulding them as useful and responsible citizens, making them to realise their mistakes, responsibilties etc,of course in the course of their academic career.

When I was promoted to the third standard my joys knew no bounds, as if I have achieved something remarkable in life.I stood second in the class throughout the second standard and one Usharani was the first rank holder. When I came to third standard 'A'section, Usharani was not there.Hence,I think I became a little bit complacent and assumed that I would be first in the class.

Classes for the third standard began in the first week of June. The monthly tests were conducted in the last week of June. The rank cards were issued in the first week of July.I had failed in three subjects.

My third standard teacher was one Madam.Sundaravalli,a brahmin widow, in a very orthodax attire. While issuing the rank card to me, she asked me to meet her when the school was over.I met her.

"You had been a second rank holder in the second standard. But you see, in the very first monthly test of this year, you have failed in three subjects. You are overconfident of yourself that you know everything and nobody can beat you.Am I right?"

"..."

"Being confident will do a lot of good but being overconfident will lead you to only very poor performance.Do you understand what I say ?You should not fail in any subject in the July monthly test and you should get a rank.ok?"

The advice given by my third standard class teacher served as an eye opener and I managed to pass all but one subjects in July and in the month of August I got 9 th rank and in the quarterly exam I got first rank,(due to the fact that Usha Rani was not in my class, I assumed.)

Though there is nothing spectacular about it, what I try to emphasise is that my class teacher had bestowed her personal attention on me which helped me to correct myself, to rewind my level of confidence, which reflected in the test performances mentioned above. As a teacher Madam. Sundaravalli did her best with her unflinching devotion to duty.Hence I can never forget her and I pay my sincere tributes to her with all my heart.
