The Widening Generation Gap
Generation gap is one of the major problems being faced by the modern day society today. But what really causes generation gap. Perhaps it is the rate of changes that society offers and it contributes a lot to generations. Within a fast changing social order, the time interval between generations is merely a moment and it creates a hiatus between one generation and the next. Inevitably under such conditions youth is brought up in conditions entirely different from their parents. Thus the parents become old fashioned and are out dated as far as the thoughts and outlook is concerned.
Age realism versus youth idealism leads to conflict among both. There is constant difference of opinion and thought between the two. Thus it leads to conflict. Though both the youth and the aged claim to see the truth, the elderly are more conservatively realistic than the young are. The youth takes the utopian ideals rather seriously. The elderly conveniently forgets the poetic ideals of a new social order that they themselves had cherished when young. In their place they simply put the working ideals. There is also more weightage towards status quo. The young have ideals, which soar to the sky.
This boundless idealism of youth becomes complicated when they find themselves incompatible with the elderly. Therefore they start taking their own decisions which do not conform to the prevailing yardsticks. The generation gap arises.
When a child grows into an adolescent his personality expands. His future is before him. For the parents it’s behind them. For them, the future is in the sense that the offspring represents. This results in a disparity of interest. In the process the young places his thoughts upon a future which does not include the parents, whereas the parents place their hopes upon the young. Thus the young and the old possess conflicting attitude. Sometimes parent wish to fulfill their own dreams force the child to follow and therefore arises conflict between the two.
As a matter of fact be, the youth of every era has regarded the old as out-of-date, old-fashioned, conservative and lacking in initiative. On the contrary, the older generation has felt the young as wanting in understanding and respect. The objectives and aspirations and pursuits of older and younger generation are opposed to each other. The materialist things, comforts etc have caught up with the young. Even the music with throbbing rhythm is a craze with them. They don’t have the patience to ‘waste’ time on the finer nuances of the language. The mood and temper of the generation is manifestly different.
Thus ultimately we deduce that prejudices and stereotypes hinder our personal development and separate us from each other. We need to look earnestly and honestly at ourselves and try to discard these faults. Then and only then we can communicate effectively regardless of age and background.
