The Problem of Brain Drain

Brain drain is one of the major problems being faced by economically underdeveloped countries today. A country devotes a lot of time and resources to build up an individual. But after attaining the degrees and professionalism in their fields these individuals or what we call learned brains fly out of their own native places in search of greener pastures.

Just as people move from one part of their country to another and even leave their homeland in search of more favorable living conditions or better jobs, so a country stands looser in terms of an intellectual. Or we can say the loss of one country is gain for other country in terms of brain.

People move about the earth’s surface, driven by economic compulsions and political necessity. In earlier times people moved from one place to another in search of food or livelihood. People of early ancient Greek era moved because their own land was small and infertile. Possibly it was the climatic conditions which gradually made life more difficult in the grasslands of Central Asia where people lived: they might have been attracted by stories of a more advanced civilization to the west and South.

In modern times there has been a considerable migration from the South East Asian countries due to many factors. There have been unpleasant living conditions created by the industrial revolution. The salaries offered by the private and Government sector are too low. The working conditions and environment are not very conducive. The work culture and atmosphere is dismal.

After attaining professional degrees like doctorate, engineering , technical expertise or else, we see that the young generation is easily lured towards the western world in search of better economic conditions.

There is a hope of improving their standards of living and of sharing in what they believe to be the benefits of urban civilization. This is also associated with the fall in demand for industrial workers due to computerization and workers in agriculture as farming has become more and more mechanized.

There is lack of demand in almost every field and on the same there is scarcity of jobs in both ‘government and private’ sectors.

The need of the hour is to reverse this trend of massive man migration, or else day is not far when the west will be super advance and will overtake the reigns of the entire world at the advantage of brain gain. This can only be done by instilling a sense of patriotic instinct in the young individuals and making them realize that their motherland needs them more than others.
