Animal Welfare -- Live And Let Live !

“I can’t abide a butcher,
I can’t abide his meat,
The ugliest shop of all is his,
The ugliest in the street.”

------Walter de la Mare

Do we really need animal welfare programmes? This was the question that was asked when I watched a TV show. One reply that came was “Yes it is very necessary because animals provide us with milk and meat, skin for shoes, leather jackets, handbags and many other uses” .Another answer was ,”They provide us with amusements for our children “.Yet another answer was,”They are useful in agriculture and transport, which is necessary for our survival.” Some felt we should have compassion and sympathy towards them as human beings.

Throughout the show I felt they were all very honest in their answers. But what came to my mind was “Should animals be always used to serve OUR purpose?”
NO. Why don’t we just let them be? Even if they are used why don’t people think it’s their duty to give them proper care? It is a pity that most animals , both domestic and wild, are not provided with proper food, shelter, medical care and hygienic conditions. They are often exploited and overloaded for economic gains. Many do not even stop for a moment to think before killing animals for sport and amusement.

People may differ in their view points and justify their acts of mercilessness but what is certain is that animals are integral part of our living world and environment. By killing them the ecological balance and natural food chain gets disturbed. Just as Earth is our habitat ,it is their habitat too. The government alone cannot take the responsibility of animal welfare, we as human beings need to take the responsibility too. But during recent times we sadly watch man's ruthlessness and cruelty towards animals.

There are laws and regulations to control this cruelty but the response seems to be poor. The government of India released a list of endangered species in 1952 especially to protect the tigers which did have an impact and the tiger population increased. But can’t it be applied to other species also ? Their is a need for public movement and change in attitude towards animals. We need a heart full of love for animals.

Like many animal lovers I have stopped using silk materials for clothing and I have also vowed not to buy any leather article. I promised myself as long as I live I will never break this promise that I made to myself. We are strict vegetarians and I am glad I was born in this community. We have no right to take away the life of another living being ,be it animals or humans.
