Women Empowerment
Since ages unknown, woman has been treated by their male counterparts in a shabby and ruthless manner. It has always been a man dominated society, be it family or nation, it is always the man who leads. But if we give a serious thought to it, don’t women have equal rights or are they so powerless and numb to accomplish anything. Perhaps there can be no true democracy, no people’s participation without equal participation of women in governance and development of a nation. They have to rank equal in all the spheres of life and at all levels of decision making, be it domestic or national front.
Every year Women’s day is observed throughout the world on March 8. It is a global celebration which not only highlights women’s progress but also inspires them to achieve greater heights. The last few decades have seen tremendous progress of women folk in almost every field. There is an alarming rise in the number of lower and middle class women seeking employment to supplement their household needs. Previously it was seen that women only worked in domestic household chores or in fields or did petty jobs to sustain themselves as there were strong objections and a marked reluctance among the middle and lower classes to allow them to step out to earn a living. It may have been social or religious constraints.
However our society has always been gender biased.
Not withstanding the prejudices and barriers women have entered every profession today. It has been possible mainly due to factors like growing urbanization and literacy rate, rising inflation and cost of living, their growing aspirations and a will to do something and certainly for a better standard of living.
It is the participation of women which is changing the face of the whole world today. They have brought in new ideas and thoughts. They have given a new dimension to the outlook of our society. At the political front they have laid new priorities and perspectives. “Strive to Rise” has become their aim and ambition today. It is the South East Asian countries which are backward not only socially but also economically. Therefore for the development of these nations it is very important to realize the potential of women and provide them with equal rights and opportunities.
