Although depression among children is not as common as it is among adults,it is by no means unusual.There are a number of ways why a child may become depressd.The most common is stress in the family due to factors such as quarrels,child abuse or alcoholism.Another important reason may be genetic.

The most common signs of child depression are :

Clinging behaviour:
The death of a close relative,starting school,the birth of a sibling-are some of the obvious reasons.However if the child expressses fears of separation,there may be something wrong.

Not showing interest in playing:
Depressed children often say they are bored and try to avoid playing with other children.

Anti social-behaviour:
Sudden lying to the parents,playing traunts ,bullying the other siblings at home and stealing could be one of the reasons of depressions.

Constantly putting onself down:
If you feel your child is showing inferiority complex very often it's time to react.

Frequent nightmares:
Practically all children have frightening dreamsonce in a while.But if it is frequent,it is best to put it on awarning signal list.

Doing badly at school:
Sudden school phobia can be a sign of depression.A decline in scholastic performance should not be neglected.

In most cases childhood depression can be treated if detected at an early stage.Professional help should be sought immediately.Never brush aside a child's feelings as unimportant.After all children deserve as much result as adults do.
