Folic Acid - A very valuable B complex vitamin

Folic acid (aka Folate) is a very important B complex vitamin that has been known to help prevent birth defects when taken by a pregnant woman. Recent data has aldo shown that Folic acid consumption can help reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure in women.

Folic acid is found in plenty in green, leafy vegetables, fruits, dried beans and peas. The synthetic form is found in dietary supplements and fortified foods. Folic acid is important for the development of new cells in the body, in particular red blood cells. A deficiency of Folic acid leads to anaemia. Folic acid also helps cells resist changes in their DNA and thus helps prevent cancerous changes in cells.

Folic acid taken even before conception helps reduce the incidences of birth defects in the baby called as neural tube defects (like spina bifida and anencephaly.) In the latest retrospective study over 150000 women between the ages 23 and 70 were followed up for 8 years and it was found that women who regularly took Folic acid were found to have a lower incidence of hypertension. Although not a clinical trial in itself the results indicate a new benefit from the consumption of Folic acid.

Doctor Rajgopal, I am happy that your article here...

highlights the importance of the intake of folate by women both young and old. Just as you say it is found in small quantities in food. Could you please mention what would be the daily dosage in tablet form. It would be informative for every one to know this. I often participate in health camps for the poor and displaced in our country and this is one vitamin I deal out to all the women and children believing that it is useful for brain development in children.

Folic acid requirement

Folic acid is one of the B complex vitamins. The recommended daily allowance for Folic acid is 400 micrograms for an adult. Pregnant women need 600 micrograms per day and breastfeeding mothers need 500 micrograms per day.Taking a daily multivitamin tablet with 0.4 mg of folic acid is a good way to get the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance.) If there is a history of neural tube defects in the previous pregnancy we prescribe higher dosage of 4 milligrams per day.

Food sources for Folic acid include:
Beans and legumes
Citrus fruits and juices
Wheat bran and other whole grains
Dark green leafy vegetables
Poultry, pork, shellfish
Liver.
