Indian Cricket:BCCI vs ICL,a comparitive study.
Cricket,as the former tennis ace Vijay Amirtharaj said,is one of the religions in India.Among Indian sports cricket enjoys a pre-eminent status, even inviting the jealousy of hocky, our national game and other sports, because, the pay and other perks given to the cricket players and the awards showered on them is quite unimaginable. For example, for all the sixes cracked by Yuvaraj Singh as against England in the twenty-twenty match played in South Afica, he was awarded a purse of Rs one crore.Quite amazing!Really a tremendous boost for a modern cricketor!
The cricket in India is managed by the Board of Cricket Control In India, under the presidentship of our Agriculture minister, Sharad Pawar and by a number of officials. The BCCI is the richest cricket board than any other in the world.Of late,BCCI has a rival outfit in India, known as Indian Cricket League (ICL), sponsored by the ZEE groups of companies and presided over by our former veteran cricketor, KapilDev.ICL,though started recently has gained momentum and popularity by enlisting world famous players, like Brian Lara,Inzamam-ul-Haq,Chris Cairns,Marvan Atapattu and others, by offering them a hefty purse in millions of dollars.
The BCCI,immeditely after the formation of ICL, removed Kapil Dev from the chairmanship of National Cricket Academy and has proposed bans for those who join ICL.On the other hand ICL, unmindful of the reactions from the BCCI, has enlisted a number of former players like Sandeep Patil,Balwindersing Sandu,Madan Lal and others to coach their players. Some Ranji players from Andhra and club players etc unable to have a foothold in the National Team, have joined ICL,in search of progress besides money.ICL also found one surprise followers from the Indian politics, our own Railway Minister,Lalu, who offerred to lease the railway grounds to the ICL.BCCI has announced some interesting twenty-twenty tournaments to be held shortly.Whereas,ICL has started oraganising twenty-twenty matches in right earnest at Chandigar Panchkula stadium, dividing their groups of players into six leagues.
Now the real question that lie before us, is whether the ban of ICL players by the BCCI is justified?Whether the BCCI and ICL should co-exist?For the time-being there seems to be no way to find out, because each outfit is busy and active in its own way.
