Understanding Tuberclosis
Some diseases like measles, chickenpox & mumps are considered as good news as once recovered one cannot have the disease again. This is because defense mechanisms render the body immune system for future invasions. But, TB is considered as a different entity. A TB infected person has the germs within his body for rest of the life. Evidences of TB are enlarged lymph glands, meningitis, damaged lungs, bones, joints etc. But the body shows no evidence of illness. Thanks to their efficient systems. People having TB bacillus in their glands & lungs but in active are said to be having subclinical infections. Such people have trouble due to things like malnutrition & defect of immunity. In such cases obvious TB can develop. TB can be controlled by identifying & curing persons with disease & helping prevent helping in subclinical patients. In mid 1950's antibiotic drugs for TB were discovered. From that day TB cases starting reducing but in 1985 TB cases increased by 16% in USA. The reasons behind this could be poverty, homelessness, increasing drug abuse etc. It is not easy to treat TB patients s curing drugs have to be taken for long periods. Failure to comply with disease can lead to development of resistance to usual drugs.
