HYBRID HARVEST

mrinmoy57's picture

Britain's chief scientific adviser has called for the mass planting of genetically-modified crops in order to feed the world's fastest-growing countries. David King said the next green revolution should be "more crop per drop" because of looming worldwide water shortages and climate change.

His call for Britain to take a lead role in developing, nurturing and advertising GM technology. King did not address concerns raised by anti-GM campaigners, who learnt that the control of seeds and agricultural techniques was passing from farmers in poor countries to a clutch of rich and allegedly MNCs. He said it may actually safer "than normal plant foods because you can snip out the proteins that cause the negative reaction".

But Britain Prime Minister Gordon Brown refused to endorse King's advice, saying "we are not at that point". King, a respected scientist, where science meets politics.
