Well I agree with the good content bit, something i'm struggling with right at this very second so my alternative is to surf other blogs for a while and comment where I feel genuinely interested in the other persons posts.
Once you know what to do all you need to do is create content and once all you do is create content, your content will be better and because you already know what to do, you'll be a millionaire.
What I mean is make great content but know how to promote it, it really isn't that hard to get hundreds of visits to a new crappy post (trust me, I know), imagine what would happen if that post was actually great "original" content.

Submit your site to search engines like Google, MSN and AOL. Create a site map/index of your links that the search engines can index , and know just what content you have available
Respond to your commenters (I have left several comments on different blogs with NO response from the blog author.Check out your competition and leave comments on their blog and leave your link..
