MOVING AN INJURED PERSON

MOVING AN INJURED PERSON

Untold damage can be done by moving an injured person, particularly if the injury involves the head, neck or back. If you can possibly get a doctor or ambulance, cover the patient with blankets or coats where he lies and wait for help. Don’t attend to change the position of the victim until the nature of his injuries is known, unless moving is absolutely necessary to prevent further injuries. If the victim must be pulled to safety, move his body lengthways, not sideways. If possible, slip a blanket or a long coat under him so that he can ride on that. If he must be lifted, don’t jack-knife him by lifting his heels and head only. Support each part of the body so that you lift it in a straight line. Several persons will be required for this.

Don’t bundle a seriously injured person into a car and speed towards the nearest town. Don’t attempt to transport him in any but a reclining or semi-reclining position. If he absolutely must be transported, improvise a stretcher. The most desirable is a door, or a wide board. Lacking these, make a stretcher out of blankets and poles, or out of buttoned jackets, with the sleeves turned inwards and the poles run through the sleeves. Use a chair (carried by two people) to bring an injured person down narrow or winding stairs. When reporting an accident, inform the doctor or hospital of the nature of the accident and injuries. Seek advice regarding the safest procedure. When in doubt, leave the injured person where he lies until medical help arrives- making sure that he is safe from any further harm.

Good information Sylvia

Most of us(not u) are just on-lookers when it comes to helping an injured person. We don't even think of letting some fresh air reach the victim, instead crowd around him/her.

Basic things should be known.

We need more such articles on campus. And U will write them for us.Won't U?

Great!
uma

Thank you Uma,

Many victims have lost their lives or become vegetative after incorrect handling. I am bringing up a few more on first aid.

Have a happy day!
