Shekhar Suman: Spirituality is connecting with the One within

Spirituality, for me, is connecting with the One within. I believe that it is the small voice that comes from within – which guides us and which many people term as conscience. I believe that conscience is actually the voice of God, speaking to us. When you listen to your conscience, you connect with God. Spiritualism, therefore is the constant dialogue between man and God.

I have played many roles in my life. However, the best role, according to me, is when one is true to oneself. Therefore, I have listened to my inner voice and acted accordingly. From my childhood, i have always been led to believe in God, the universal power. I feel that the values which our parents instill in us are meant to enable us to have a strong conscience, which, in turn, brings us closer to God. I have often wondered — what is life all about? Where are we headed? What is the reason for our being? Life, i have realised, is actually a quest for finding answers. It is also an individual quest. Although the questions may be the same, each person will find different answers.

People ask me, what made you turn towards spirituality? I think it happened when i lost my eldest son. It was a time when i was shattered. I turned towards God and asked, "Why me?" I got the answer, "You are not the only one who has lost a son." This made me realise what life is all about. We usually go through life with our eyes shut. We behave like ostriches. It is as if we do not want to acknowledge the reason why life has been given to us. I feel that we have been brought here for a reason.

In our journey, we have to face challenges, which have been placed there to make us confront ourselves and to find answers, which reveal the purpose of our being. God helps us all along the way.
