In conversation with GOD

"I am angry with you. I am feeling terribly bad today,” I complained to GOD, one day.

“Why?” God asked anxiously

“Never did I complain about what I did not have... I always accepted with humility whatever you gave me... I always reconciled with whatever I did not get, despite deserving it... But once in a while, do I still not deserve to be granted a few small wishes that may be left of me…” I asked

“Sure my child… Tell me what do you want? But before that can you tell me exactly how many wishes do you want to be granted? Can you promise that there will be no more wishes after I grant them all today?”

I was taken aback & puzzled for a moment. After all I could not count my wishes once for all nor could I promise that I would not be having any more wishes ever. So I played smart & said instantaneously, “God just grant me one wish & nothing more”

God smiled at me. Of course He knew what was going on in my mind. “Wow! Tell me what you want?” He asked lovingly.

“I want to be happy”. That was the best wish! It would take care of everything & relieve me from the responsibility of counting my wishes or promising no more of them in future. It was my eternal desire & the smartest wish anyone could have ever asked for. I was sure with this wish God will be stumped.

“Happiness is not something, which I can grant you again, My child. It’s within you already. It’s your choice, your attitude... If you are not happy, you have deprived yourself from it by putting conditions on it… When you would have freed yourself from these self-imposed fetters, you will be happy.”

My googly had bounced back on me. I was not convinced. I asked God, “Which chains are you talking about? I see none of them”

God smiled & asked, “Tell me, When was the last time that you woke up smiling that you have another day to make beautiful for yourself & others? When was the last time that you looked out of your window & felt happy about the light that you can see.... the chirping of birds that you can hear.... the beauty of the flowers growing on the roadside & all the things that you can do without being dependant on anyone?”

I was silent

“My child, Go out into the world... Spend a day with a blind child or a lame man and you will realize what it means to be really happy... Visit a sick man fighting with cancer, you will know how much you are losing of every passing day despite being able to do so many things... Ask a mother who is fighting her age & desperation, with simple hope that her son whom she herself had sent away will return home to once again brighten her world & you will realize how happy you are that you have a family... Observe a delinquent sleeping on the pavement in rags & you will realize what it means to have a shelter & two meals a day…”

“But then God if I have all these things isn’t it justified for me to aspire for more & to make more of my life…” I argued

“Sure… If you are given a Life, it is your responsibility to make the most of it but then what you keep forgetting time & again is that these are certain blessings that you have already & you CANNOT take them for granted... These blessings are the ultimate pleasures that are yours. Beyond these if you want anything more, try to achieve them & if you can then cherish them & spread happiness around; But do not forsake your happiness for those unrealized ambitions overlooking these simple pleasures that I have so painstakingly spread out in everyone’s Life’s pathways… It hurts me to see my children sad because of their own ignorance…

Look at the Beauty of Life as it is. Do not try to define it in your terms… This way Life would lose its very own existence coz then everyone will fight for his own world, as he/she wants it & this is impracticable… I Love all my children & want them to Live together in Harmony & Peace... I have given you A Life to Live, A Mind to perceive and A Body for doing what you can. In turn, what I expect is that you accept your fellow beings despite their different attitudes & their shortcomings... Unless you will do it with others, you will not be happy.”

“But then if I do this to others, shouldn’t others do the same to me too... Unless they do the same how can I be happy?”

“That’s where you are mistaken, my child... You should be happy by doing it to others in the first place instead of expecting them to reciprocate… Happiness lies in doing what you can, in savoring what you have got & in enjoying what is happening to you… By putting conditions of desire on Happiness, you will keep chasing it like a boy chases a thread-less kite drifting in the sky... Unfulfilled desires should motivate you, inspire you to look beyond and not let you wallow in grief blaming ill fate… Do not wait for Happiness to happen to you…

Happiness is around you in the bright blue sky.. in the silver gray fluffy clouds.. in the pecking birds.. in the blossoming trees.. in the children’s play.. in a stranger’s smile. Happiness is everywhere, my child... All you need to do is Get up & look around…

Just SMILE more often & you will be happy…”

No doubt, I hadn’t got what I wanted for but I got what I needed. “Thank you, God”, I said

“GO out my child… Be happy & spread happiness around... That will make Me happy too...” God smiled & then… There was Light…
