CRITICISM
CRITICISM
Criticizing others is a usual habit with most of the people on Earth. If we observe closely we can find that some people very often evince more interest in criticizing others’ activities, conduct, behaviour, achievements and failures whenever they find an opportunity without making the least effort to visualize their problems. The tendency of criticizing others is independent of one’s level of education, standard of upbringing, present position and social status. In most cases it is taken as a feat of humour and a palatable stuff for fun without caring a fig for its probable impact on the person being criticised. Well, constructive and creative criticisms are always welcome as they serve as alerts to refinement but vague, illogical, irrational, outrageous, divisive, disruptive, irritating, agitating criticisms aimed at some one as playful pranks, at times, turn out to be the principal gadgets to cause immense harm to him and affect his performances badly if the said person is not matured enough to absorb them. Such undesirable criticisms not only undercut the output of a person but also create an atmosphere of discomfort for him by hitting hard on his sentiments which discourage him to take an active role in the process of development and building up of a cohesive society.
It is a fact that making undesirable, caustic and harmful criticisms is not someone’s inherited trait but this is the by-product of a person’s jealousy, contempt, animosity, competition, inefficiency, failures, frustrations, sufferings, poverty, inequalities, lack of manliness and above all, the lack of self confidence. Added to this, freedom of speech as ensured by fundamental rights in a democratic country serve as booster to make criticisms on anything that comes on the way openly and fearlessly.
As a matter of fact, it is a hard task to draw a distinct line between a constructive or creative criticism and a disruptive or abusive one. A criticism which sounds bad to one may appear good to some other. For example, if a man ventures to rescue someone from an inevitable accident by risking his life, it is not guaranteed that his such action will be appreciated and praised by all; there will be some one to criticise by saying that he did this act because he wanted to come to the lime light or qualify for a gallantry award or so on and so forth. Again, if some one by virtue of his good nature comes out to extend help physically or financially to the victims of natural calamities, everybody may not appreciate it, rather, there will be some people to criticise by saying that he did so with an intent to earn cheap popularity and there would be some people to go a step further to say that the fellow has reaped this golden opportunity to come out as hero by parting with a few coins from his huge reserves of ill got money. Unfortunate part of it is that all others would not condemn such criticism rather there will be some to relish this as a food for their humour. On the other hand if a person behaves as an antisocial brute and turns out to be the main prop of creating disturbances and nuisance in public, only a limited number of people living around may come forward to criticize or condemn his immoral and harmful acts but there will be many to encourage him for doing such acts.
Under the circumstances what should a man do? Should he stop working for fear of being criticized or carry on with his scheme of things as nothing has happened? Perhaps most people prefer to follow the later. Here comes a deciding factor whether do or not to do a work depending on its necessity. When a particular work is meant for a man’s own interest, he does not care to pause for a moment for fear of criticism but if it is set for others or for the interest of general public, he takes all precautions to avoid criticism. It is also not uncommon that there are some people who for nothing slip away from doing their duties and discharging the responsibilities connected with public interest under some excuses or other for fear of being criticized. Are they not escapists?
Criticisms, as it were, will be there and these are the naked realities of life. Therefore, one should not disturb his mindset with imaginary apprehensions of criticisms while discharging his duties and responsibilities in ordinary course of business. Rather he should feel happy to welcome criticisms with a firm conviction that there are at least some people to take cognizance of his actions. Moreover a man is not God so that he will be error free or all his actions, conduct and behaviour will be perfect and sacrosanct. It is said that every human being has four quadrants in his brain. Out of the four, one quadrant is visible to him and to others. This is his nature. One quadrant is neither visible to him nor to others. This is an unknown zone which is beyond his reach and even some people go to spend ages in meditation to discover this mysterious vista. One quadrant is visible to self but not to others. This is the strength of a person. Another quadrant is not visible to self but visible to others. This is the weak point of a person. Success or soundness of any action or word generating instinctively from this quadrant is not guaranteed. There may be failures and frustrations. Therefore, nothing to worry as it is with everybody. Some people with nervous syndrome may get demotivated and discouraged to proceed further with his mission even if it is a noble one simply for fear of the assault of bitter criticisms. This is a dangerous symptom which causes irreparable losses to humanity. Therefore everyone should have to acclaimatize himself to entertain criticisms for his all actions, behaviour, conduct which would help him to fine tune the actions done so that the output becomes trouble free. Nevertheless, it should be born in mind that no action, behaviour, conduct and talkings of a person should go to harm others or impair others interest for which he may have to be trapped in corrosive criticisms.
