The Cool Indian Dances

The hip-hop, cha-cha, free style dances of the west may be grasping us, but the Indian dances are still as pleasurable as ever. Just refreshing your knowledge of the various dances of our Country- India!
The Northern India is mainly known for Kathak. Katha meaning story; this is a narrative dance with mudras and expressions depicting a story. It requires grace, expression and poise to perform Kathak.
From Punjab is the much loved Bhangra. It rightly depicts the physical strength and jovial spirit of a true Punjabi. Traditionally performed during the harvest season but now has become popular worldwide.
From the South, especially Tamil Nadu, comes the <>Bharatnatyam. This dance form dates back from the time of lord Shiva. There are three aspects of this dance form-Nritta (rhythmic movement), Nritya (expressive movements) and Natya (drama in dance).
Another dance of South is the Kuchipudi dance which presents scenes from the Hindu epics and mythology. This dance form also uses lyrics during performance.
Orissa in East India is known for Odissi dance. It is a devotional dance with various poses and graceful movements depicting the love of the Hindu deities, Radha and Krishna.
Manipuri is another classical dance form combining light, delicate movements, footedness and lyrical music with devotion. It originated from the temples of North-East India.
Rasa and Garba dance from Gujarat are a delight during the Navaratra festival across the country. Both Rasa and Garba are circular dances performed mainly by women.
There are many other dance forms from other states too. The rich culture and tradition of our country is best represented by these various dances full of color, life and joy.
