CRPF managed to enter most of the villages of violence ravaged Nandigram on Tuesday and were conducting raids, top police official of East Midnapore district said.

There has been no resistance from either the CPM or anti-land acquisition Bhoomi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee (BUPC).

CRPF personnel were patrolling different areas with the police, District Superintendent of Police S S Panda said. The Central forces were setting up five camps in the interior areas as 500 CRPF personnel conducted raids at Sonachura, Gokulnagar, Adhikaripara and other areas, all erstwhile strongholds BUPC now under the control of CPM, he said.

There were no reports of retaliatory attacks by CPM cadres on members of the BUPC, agitating against land acquisition for past 11 months, the SP said and denied reports of exchange of fire with CPM cadres on Monday night at Garchakraberia.

To a question, Panda said 1,500 people were still out of their homes but he was hopeful they would return and not face any attacks.

Meanwhile, CRPF DIG Alok Raj, who is in Nandigram, said his force was successful in going inside the troubled area and "today we are planning to go further inside the disturbed area."

"We also intend to establish two camps deep inside the violence-hit area," he said. He said CRPF had received reports about some incidents on Monday night and they responded to some calls but they will verify it in the day light on Tuesday.

Raj said CRPF would cover all violence-hit areas, mostly south of Nandigram which include Garchakraberia, Sonachura, Gokul Nagar and Tekhali bazar.
