I Love You Enough

Everybody needs love, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, daughters or sons should tell each other how much they love them.

Parents don’t usually reveal their feelings about their children, but if they were to do so, this is what I am hoping many of them would say:

• I loved you enough to ask you about where you were going, with whom and what time you would be back
• I loved you enough to be silent and let you discover that your hand-picked friend was unsuitable
• I loved you enough to make you return what you stole and confess, “I stole this.”
• I loved you enough to stand over you for two hours till you cleaned your room, a job that would have taken me 15 minutes
• I loved you enough to not make excuses for your lack of respect or your bad manners
• I loved you enough to ignore “what every other mother did...”
• I loved you enough to figure you would lie about the party being chaperoned but forgive you for it... after discovering I was right.
• I loved you enough to accept you for what you are and not for what I wanted you to be.
• I loved you enough to let you stumble, fall and fail so that you could learn to stand alone.
• But most of all, I loved you enough to say ‘no’ when you hated me for it. That was the hardest part of all... I love you.

Children go astray for so many reasons, the most important ones of the main causes is the lack of communication and the lack of love and understanding displayed by parents. If mothers, fathers and children are able to talk to each other and express their feelings and thoughts more often, much of the disharmony in families is bound to cease.

Ask Sylvia’s advice: ...say ‘ I love you’ more often.
