Many herbs and spieces that we Indians use every day are of great value and are supposed to be papancea for amny ailments and one very important spiece is -ginger-ZINGIBER OFFICINALE.
The traditional uses of ginger include treatment of ailments involving the large intestine and colon, nausea, indigestion, paralysis of the tongue, morning sickness, vomiting, hot flashes, menstrual cramps and gas.It is best for your bones and digestive system.
Fresh ginger is highly effective in the clinical treatment of rheumatism, acute bacterial dysentery, malaria, and inflammation of the testicles and joints.
Ginger has proven active against such organisms as malaria, Shigella dysenteriae, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pheumoniae, Streptococcus spp., and the Salmonella spp.
Gingerols, the substances that give ginger its pungency, are thought to be responsible for its usefulness in treating fever and pain. Its volatile oils may be natural killers of cold and flu viruses.
It is also used in controlling and relieving the nausea after chemotherapy treatments. Researchers in India, in 1997, tested this ability and found that ginger was able to increase the rate of endurance. They have found that the acetone extracts collectively known as gingerol, were responsible for increased bile production, indicating that it plays an important role in digestion and food absorption.
Some migraine sufferers reported that ginger aborted a headache if taken during the early stages. The theory is that this ability comes from substances called shogaols and gingerols, which reduce platelet clumping, thus preventing the blood-vessel inflammation that causes migraine pain.
Ginger in bigger dose and in extracted form is harmful.Taking ginger could be harmful for individuals with a low platelet count who have nausea and vomiting as side effects of chemotherapy. In that situation, using the herb could trigger gastrointestinal bleeding.
Ginger appears to act as a blood thinner. Individuals who take aspirin or other medications that lengthen clotting time should consult a physician before taking large quantities of ginger. Using small amounts of fresh ginger in cooking is not a cause for concern.
Some studies show that very large doses might cause depression of the central nervous system, but ginger may be the remedy of choice for treating motion sickness. Its side effects are minimal when compared to those associated with antihistamines, the drugs usually used to treat such symptoms.
