when I was a little girl

padmini's picture

I loved travelling and our family always went on picnics on weekends. We had lot of fun, great food packed and great places to visit and this was a big turn in my life.I started loving birds, animals and nature.
Once we went to a place called -Ranganathitu -a bird sanctuary near by.120 km from Bangalore on Bangalore - Mysore Road, nearly 15 km from Mysore.Ranganthittu was formed as a result of a small dam across the river Cauvery in the 1600s. The Bird Sanctuary at Ranganathittu owes its existence to the world famous ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali who convinced the Maharaja of Mysore in 1940 to declare Ranganthittu as a protected area.
The most common birds in the sanctuary are painted storks, spoon bills, white ibises, egrets, herons and partridges. Most of the birds stay on tiny islands within the river, which you can approach by boat. However, the river is also home to a few crocodiles, so don't jump in for a swim!
The entrance of the park has huge bamboo surrounding the winding path. On both sides of the path are boards with pictures and information about the different birds that are found in the sanctuary. There is a small canteen situated near the lake made in a clearing between the bamboos. The best season to visit the sanctuary is May-September and October. If you are a nature enthusiast it is best to visit the sanctuary in the early hours of the morning before the sanctuary gets crowded with visitors.
It is still ever green in my memory.May be we should all visit. This is the right season
